magicmomma > We hadn't gotten more than 1.5 miles into the Piney River Trail hike when we started seeing gaywings emerging. We first thought maybe we were too early for them, but a few steps more revealed hundreds of them open and peak bloom!
magicmomma > Last year I discovered the largest group of bluebells I'd ever seen in one place or in my life. I took a break from housework and studying and went for a 20 minute walk down the Coulters Bridge Bluebell Trail. Here is what I saw.

magicmomma > A tributary stream to Little River just a short distance from my house. The source if the stream is a spring. Along the course of this stream through a grass meadow a landowner has sprayed herbicide all along it to kill weedy, tall grasses. They obtained a permit and posted it, but the herbicides certainly got into the creek and consequently into Little River. The stream still appears to be healthy and full of life such as minnows, frogs, and snails. I saw hummingbirds and other birds around this little creek. It is rimmed by any number of gorgeous flowers such as cardinal flower, more great blue lobelia than I've ever seen in one spot, orange jewelweed, creeping dayflower, etc. Butterflies and dragonflies love this little creek and call its banks home. We all need to be careful and limit use of herbicides and pesticides. They get into our water supply and can effect wildlife and vegetation.
